What to expect from your first visit
First visits are for understanding your diagnosis, what has already been done, and what might come next. Details depend on your case; the steps below are what most people see.
Before you arrive
- Bring a valid ID, insurance or payment information if required by the hospital, and a list of medications and allergies.
- Bring copies of recent scans, pathology reports, and discharge summaries if you have them.
- Bring a short list of questions so nothing important is missed.
During the consultation
- History: Symptoms, past treatments, and how you have been feeling.
- Review of investigations: Imaging and biopsy results help clarify diagnosis and stage.
- Discussion of options: Whether further tests, systemic therapy, or referral to other specialists is appropriate, and the general aims of treatment (e.g. cure, control, symptom relief).
- Time for questions: You are encouraged to ask about side effects, duration of therapy, and support services.
After the visit
You may receive a written summary or follow-up instructions from the hospital. Further appointments for treatment planning, chemotherapy education, or multidisciplinary meetings may be scheduled as needed.
